Home Interior Paint Ideas
Calling all DIYers. Stuck thinking about your next project? Do you have a blank wall in your home just crying out from some decoration? Look no further. We have compiled some of the most popular DIY painting and design trends that people are doing in their homes. All of these trends are great for those working within a tight budget and can help you exercise your creative side.
Faux Wallpaper
Wallpaper can make for a fun accent wall in your house but why deal with all the hassle of installing it? An idea for a feature wall is to paint geometric or abstract patterns by hand. If you have any extra paint laying around and some tape, you can create your very own accent wall. There are several ways to go about this trend. If you are feeling confident or wanting to achieve more of an abstract pattern, you can always freehand any design you choose. However, if you are wanting some guaranteed straight lines, you can always use tape to section off your design. If you decide to section off different parts of your wall to do different design patterns, we recommend using painter’s grade masking tape. This tape is a great choice for this type of DIY because its peel adhesion does not increase over time and it can be easily removed without causing damage to the paint on your wall.
Wainscoting & Custom Woodwork
If you live in a home that is a little older, then you may already have some wainscoting or custom woodwork in your home. Wainscoting was historically used to hide imperfections or protect walls from being dinged up. It eventually became a desirable decorative detail that people wanted to put in their home! Similarly, wood paneling became popular because it was low in cost and easy to install. Today, we are seeing these become very popular DIY projects. There is really not an incorrect way to install wainscoting or create a wood paneling accent wall because you can utilize a variety of materials and design techniques. Materials that you could use to install these accent walls yourself would be: Beadboard, Shiplap, Plywood, Battens, Cap Molding, and Baseboards. If you are wanting to add some additional charm to your home this is the next DIY project for you.
Two Toned Painted Cabinets
The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it is important to make this room stand out. White cabinets are definitely a desirable look, but have you ever considered using two colors? Our HOMEstretch Visualizer demonstrates these options so well if you’re interested in seeing this idea come to life! Two tone cabinets are becoming a popular trend. Most homeowners are painting their upper cabinets white and the lower cabinets a color that would work well with the tone or style of the house. A color pairing that we love in the kitchen is SW 7005 Pure White & SW 7625 Mount Etna.
Dark Accent Walls
We have all been spending more time in our homes over the past year. As many of us continue to work in a hybrid environment we want to make our living and office space as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Consider adding a dark accent wall to your home. Darker and more earthy tones are becoming the popular choice amongst homeowners. Especially charcoals, dark greys, blacks, and even darker blues and greens. Some great color choices that we recommend are SW 7017 Dorian Gray, SW 7625 Mount Etna, SW 7048 Urbane Bronze, & SW 7069 Iron Ore. These deep earth tones help center us and create a cozy living or working environment. To add even more dimension, try accenting with light furniture or wall art.
Painting Between Shelves
Bookshelves can be more than just a place to house books, pictures, and other knick knacks. Try making them a cool statement piece by painting the back walls of the shelves. This creates more dimension in the space and makes the furniture feel more a custom to your home. If you don’t have a bookshelf or built-ins to try this out with, you could install some simple floating shelves and paint the wall behind it an accent color. It’s a great way to add a pop of color in the room without going overboard. Add even more personality to your room by choosing pieces or belongings to highlight in your newly DIY-ed bookshelf. This will add a tremendous amount of visual interest in your home.
Color Block Painted Arch
We’ve all seen it all over Tik Tok and Instagram, so we had to talk about this trend – the painted arch! Arches are very symbolic. They can represent strength, support, lightness, and they help lift the eye up to a higher plane. Painting an arch on your wall can add a focal point to your room. This could be where you feature a cute display piece, or it can simply be used to create some dimension and add some design elements to the room.
