Moving Tips - Before You Start Packing

Moving can be exciting, but also stressful. As tempting as it might be to dive right in to boxing up your belongings, a little prep work done in advance can go a long way – making your move as smooth and as seamless of a transition as possible. Before you burry yourself up to your eyeballs in packing tape and boxes here are some easy steps you can take to make your packing process easier.

1. Stock up on packing materials.

When it comes to moving you can never have enough boxes and packing tape on hand. Box cutters, moving blankets, and ropes can all come in handy when it comes time for packing and transport, and if you already have these items available it will cause less stress and confusion on moving day. Also, take the time to see if you have any boxes on hand or if you have items that could serve as boxes. Containers, baskets, hampers, etc… can all be used in your packing and moving process.

2. Declutter! Declutter! Declutter!

Although it can seem like a daunting task, it is important to take the time to declutter your home when getting ready to move. Not only will this save you time when packing, but it will also give you a fresh start when you arrive at your new home.

3. Book your moving company.

The sooner you can book your moving company the better. Booking in advance ensures the dates for your move are reserved. In addition to saving you stress leading up to moving day, booking sooner rather than later prevents you from having to pay any additional costs a moving company might charge for waiting to reserve until the last minute.

4. Save space by using up product.

If you are moving locally, it is easy to transfer the food you have to your new home. However, if you are moving long distance it will create less trash and hassle for you on moving day if you can create a meal plan to use up the food currently in your kitchen. Ideally, try to make your last grocery store run at least two weeks prior to moving day. The same goes for toilet paper, soap, and other household cleaners and detergents. The less you must pack the better.

5. Set aside valuables!

Before you start packing, take note of the items you want to keep with you when traveling to your new home. Set these items aside in a safe spot so you do not have to worry about mixing them up with the rest of your belongings. Items to take with you could include any legal documents, medical records, financial documents, etc.
